Update: If you had trouble getting in to today's lesson or you were late and unable to get in, join us tomorrow from 10:30 to 11:00. I will be teaching about 'theme' again. Or, you can follow the instructions below and work through the lesson assignments.
1. Below is the link to the Theme PPT. Please read through and practice with some of the stories to find the theme. You don't have to read all of the stories. But, do review the information for theme.
2. Read the following story and then go to the forms link to answer the questions:

Daily Work: We will take our Non-fiction signposts quiz Tuesday, the 12th. Then, we will begin our lessons on Author's Purpose: to persuade, to inform, to entertain. We will have a quiz on Friday on Author's Purpose.
Next week, Wednesday, Nov. 20, we will have our Unit Test over non-fiction signposts, author's purpose, non-fiction text, main idea and summary.
Reading Counts test due on November 15, this Friday!

Daily Work: We are learning about how to determine the main idea of a text and how to summarize a text. We are also continuing to learn the non-fiction signposts. AC Reading is starting our first novel, Bad Boy: A Memoir by Walter Dean Myers.
Homework: IXL Reading Strategies: Main Idea - due Friday
October 21-25, 2019
Daily Work: We are learning about the 5 organizational structures of non-fiction: cause/effect, problem/solution, chronological order, compare/contrast and description. Wednesday, we are in the lab practicing problem/solution texts on IXL. Please allow students to continue to work on this assignment at home.
We are learning about the 5 signpost for non-fiction text. The 3 we will focus on this week are Compare/Contrast, Extreme
or Absolute Language, and Number and Statistics. Learning these signposts help us to understand our text better.
Homework: The Crossword Puzzle is due on Monday, Oct. 28. Students, remember, not all of the clues will require you to write in the name of a text structure. There are some answers you will need to guess. Make sure the number of letters fit in the squares and that any word that crosses another word fits, as well. On the back of the puzzle is a study guide for our quiz on non-fiction text structures. The quiz will be on Monday.

Daily Work: We are continuing our unit on Non-fiction text.
Homework for this week: Be sure you have your Reading Counts
book checked out from the library or chosen from home, the book fair,
etc. Read for 20 minutes a night. Write a summary of what you have
read this week. Don't forget to include a topic sentence, at least 3-5
important events, and a concluding sentence. Use transition words!

New deadline for Reading Counts - we have decided to move the deadline for the Reading Counts quiz to Friday, October 4. If you have already taken a Reading Counts tests, you will earn PBIS points. If you haven taken the test, but want to try to make a higher grade, you may retake it, or read another book and take a new test. Students only have to take one test the 1st 9 weeks, instead of the two originally planned. However, next quarter, the requirement goes back to two per quarter.

Weekly Work: Finding the elements of plot in a short story, week 2; this week, we will begin working in small groups.
Don't forget - Reading Counts test #1 is due Friday, Sept. 6. We will go to the library Thursday and Friday to take our first tests. Those who have finished taking test get to play Jeopardy Plot Elements Game on Friday!
Homework: Stranded in Wyoming, due Monday, Sept. 9
August 26-30, 2019
Homework: Read the story Goal from the handout. Answer the comprehension questions 1-5. On the backside, fill in the definitions for elements of plot and how the elements relate to the story.
Due 8/30 for all classes, except 2nd period. 2nd period due Sept. 3 (They go theirs late.)
